  A day off...

It's obviously been awhile since I've taken a moment to post anything here, or at least since I've paid much attention. I'm just now seeing the alterations made to the interface for posting, undoubtedly made weeks ago. The addition of various ways to alter the style of posts makes me happy. I'm definitely an HTML dinosaur, used to plugging away with hand-coding, and it's only been my return to graduate school that has acquainted me with all of the new-fangled applications for generating code. I must admit that I'm still in the stage where I'm playing around with altering the colors of everything I type. I'm sure it will pass.

A slightly alarming article from the archives of the Free-Lance Star... More and more community pools are deciding not to hire trained lifeguards to supervise patrons, opting instead for pool attendants. The attendants are trained to check water chemistry and enforce rules, but are not trained in water safety or rescue, except using reaching devices. Does this sound like a bad idea to anyone but me? Maybe it's from my years of spot-calculating of lifeguard/watcher/swimmer ratios to meet Safety-Wise specifications, but even as a proficient swimmer, I'd like someone to be on duty who is trained in CPR and could save my life if the need were to arise. The take-home lesson: make sure that your lifeguard is really a lifeguard. Geez.

Today's Weather: Humid, after four days of rain. It will likely rain some more this afternoon. August in NC is fast approaching.

  return to EST...
Well, I'm back from my 10-day trip to Greece with Mom's Latin students.  It was the first time I've been on a real vacation in about 15 years, so it was definitely worth the wait.   Wanna see my pictures?   I set up the site so that the other participants could post theirs as well, so it should be a veritable font of duplication in a few weeks.  (=

So what was my favorite part?  The archaeological site at Olympia was fantastic.  I couldn't have seen the whole site if I had spent two days there, and only about 2/3 of it is even excavated yet.  The kids had a race in the original Olympic stadium, and our tour guide made olive wreaths for the winners.  Also, the temple of Poseidon at Cape Sounion was something I'd seen in pictures, but that limited exposure can barely capture the place itself.

The sky in Greece reminds me of the sky in Nevada when I was 16.  The humidity is so low that the sky is a deep aquamarine.  And the Aegean is bluer than the sky.  Yeah, I'd go back.  I'm sure I'll be writing more about Greece later, since it's occupying most of my brainspace these days.  But for now, work is calling.

Today's Weather: hot and humid, as is normal for NC in July.

the title of this blog is in imitation of a friend and former camp counselor's clipboard. she called it her brain. so this is mine. i imagine that it will turn out to be mostly a collection of ramblings and interesting finds, most likely read only by the author herself.

Me, at the moment...

How am I feeling?

How am I feeling?

What am I reading?

Music? All sorts.

In my free time? Mostly, studying up on my STN command-line searching skills.

Last movie I saw? Rented: Watched Batman Begins again last night at home. In a theatre: Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix! At the IMAX! Before that: Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix! In the regular theater!

How's the weather where I am?
